Success is not a happy accident but rather the result of a lot of hard work on the part of the people behind the scenes. The success of El Celler de Can Roca is indisputable, but how did it all begin? The Roca brothers always explain that their first training was at home, in their parents’ restaurant, which is still in business. A key person in instigating their gastronomic passion was without doubt their mother, Montserrat Fontané, who was recently honoured.
Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe pays homage to Montserrat Fontané, mother of the Roca brothers
The European association of young restaurateurs “Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe” ((JRE), gave out the Female Gastronomy awards in Barcelona on the 7th of November. After granting various awards to women for their career and influence in gastronomy, JRA paid homage to two women. One was the unforgettable Mey Hoffman, who left us in 2015, and the other Montserrat Fontané, who before marrying Josep Roca senior, was already working in her brother’s restaurant in Girona. After they married, her and her husband founded Can Roca, where the Roca brothers grew up and received the values they still maintain to date.
