The winner of Asia’s Best Restaurants 2017 has already been revealed and there were no surprises: for the third year running, the award has gone to the Gaggan restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand. The winning chef, Gaggan Anand, was the first Indian chef who came to work in El Bulli with Ferran Adrià. He opened his restaurant 7 years ago, in 2010, looking to revitalise Indian cuisine using contemporary techniques and adding conceptual twists materialised through the integration of molecular cooking into his country’s traditional dishes.
Second place went to the Restaurant André in Singapur, run by Andre Chiang, followed by the restaurant Amber de Hong Kong, China, run by Richard Ekkebus. The representations by country in the definitive list are varied: Japan, Singapur and Thailand are present with 9 restaurants each, Hong Kong has 6 and, finally, China has 5.
The excited chef collected the award in the W Hotel in Bangkok, explaining to those present that if it was up to him, he’d “break the award into 50 little pieces and share it with all his competitors”. He also said he felt very happy “not for himself, but for Asia”.
The ceremony also served for the giving of other awards, such as Asia’s Best Female Chef 2017 which went to May Chow (Little Bao), an American chef established in Hong Kong who combines American and Chinese techniques in her cooking. Also, the restaurant Tic Toc was named Asia’s One to Watch, an award that seeks to recognise the work of relatively new restaurants that deserve special attention.
